Actriz británica. Ganó reconocimiento por primera vez en Broadway con su actuación en New Faces of 1956 y, después de ser aclamada por sus interpretaciones en The Rehearsal (1961) y Mary, Mary (1963), se unió al National Theatre Company de Gran Bretaña, donde fue protagonista de Otelo (1964; película, 1965) junto a Laurence Olivier. Entre sus siguientes películas se cuentan Los mejores años de Miss Brodie (1969, premio de la Academia), Viajes con mi tía (1972), California Suite (1978, premio de la Academia) y La solitaria pasión de Judith Hearne (1987). Se destacó por su nerviosa intensidad, su ácido ingenio e impecable ritmo escénico, y se lució en magníficas actuaciones teatrales, como en las obras Así va el mundo (1985) y Lettice and Lovage (1990, premio Tony).
